1952 F1 Swiss Grand Prix Art Print

Race Context

The 1952 Swiss Grand Prix was held at the Bremgarten circuit near Bern and was the opening round of the 1952 World Championship of Drivers. For this season, all championship races were run to Formula Two regulations rather than the Formula One rules previously in force. With Alfa Romeo withdrawn from the championship, Ferrari entered the season as the leading competitive manufacturer.

The Race

According to the official classification, the race was won by Piero Taruffi driving for Ferrari. This victory was Taruffi’s only win in a World Championship Grand Prix. Ferrari’s performance confirmed the team’s dominance at the start of the 1952 season under the new technical regulations.

The Race and Hans Stuck

Hans Stuck competed in the Swiss GP driving for the AFM team. He retired from the race on lap 4 due to engine failure and was not classified at the finish.

The Car: AFM 50

Stuck drove the AFM 50, powered by a 2.0-liter V8 engine. AFM was a small German manufacturer active in the early 1950s, fielding Formula Two cars in selected World Championship events against larger and better-funded factory teams.

Bremgarten — Bremgartenwald

The Bremgarten circuit was laid out on public roads through dense forest surrounding Bern. The Bremgartenwald section ran through wooded terrain and was a defining visual and technical feature of the circuit, contributing to its reputation as one of the fastest and most demanding road courses of the era.

Historical Context

Hans Stuck remained a significant figure in European motor racing. Renowned before the war for his successes with Auto Union, during the era of the famous "Silver Arrows", and later for his dominance in hillclimbing, he was widely known as the “King of the Mountains.” His post-war racing career and greatest achievements continued to come in hillclimb competition, and at age 60, he became German Hillclimb Champion on BMW 700 RS for the last time. He decided to retire on a high note, and thereupon closed his professional driving career.
