Michigan International Speedway Art Print: The Great American Speedway - Cale Yarborough

Inaugurated in 1968 and designed by the renowned civil engineer Charles Moneypenny (who also engineered Daytona), Michigan International Speedway (MIS) was conceived as a northern cathedral of speed to rival the great southern ovals. This 2.0-mile D-shaped superspeedway, nestled in the Irish Hills of Brooklyn, Michigan, is defined by its wide, sweeping racing surface and progressive banking of 18 degrees. Known to the racing fraternity as "The Great American Speedway," it is celebrated for its sheer velocity and the aerodynamic "drafting" battles made possible by its immense scale.

Historically, the venue served as a critical high-speed laboratory for tire development and engine endurance, particularly during the "horsepower wars" of the 1990s when CART IndyCar icons like Paul Tracy set blistering lap records exceeding 230 mph. Its proximity to Detroit has made it a vital battleground for automotive manufacturers (Ford, GM, and Toyota) vying for "backyard" bragging rights. In 2026, the speedway remains a premier stop on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar, hosting the FireKeepers Casino 400 in August. A site of relentless momentum and strategic fuel-mileage gambles, MIS persists as the quintessential theater for pure, unadulterated American horsepower.
