Phoenix Raceway Art Print: The Desert Jewel of the Southwest

Inaugurated in 1964, Phoenix Raceway (historically known as Phoenix International Raceway) was conceived as a premier open-wheel destination that would challenge the supremacy of Midwestern ovals. This 1.0-mile low-banked tri-oval in Avondale, Arizona, is architecturally unique for its asymmetrical design, famously featuring the "Dogleg"—a sweeping curve on the backstretch that allows drivers to cut below the apron, creating high-stakes, multi-car restarts. To the racing fraternity, it is known as the "Desert Jewel," celebrated for its intense sun-baked grip levels and technical complexity.

Historically, the venue’s gravity is anchored in its role as a bridge between the fading era of "Champ Cars" on dirt and the modern era of paved superspeedways. A defining technical evolution occurred in 2011 with a massive reconfiguration, followed by a 2018 renovation that moved the start-finish line to the Dogleg, fundamentally altering the tactical landscape. In 2026, the facility remains the definitive battleground for the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Weekend in November, where it crowns the champions of the Cup, Xfinity, and Craftsman Truck Series. Having historically hosted the NTT IndyCar Series and serving as a vital hub for the ARCA Menards Series West, Phoenix stands as a masterclass in modern short-track evolution, where the shimmering heat of the Sonoran Desert meets the pinnacle of automotive engineering.
