Richmond Raceway Art Print: The Action Track of the Commonwealth

Inaugurated in 1946 as a dirt track at the Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds, Richmond Raceway stands as one of the most storied venues in the NASCAR lineage. Originally a half-mile dirt oval where icons like Lee Petty battled, the facility underwent a radical transformation in 1988, when it was razed and rebuilt into its current 0.75-mile D-shaped asphalt oval. Known to the racing fraternity as "The Action Track" or "America's Premier Short Track," it is celebrated for its unique synthesis of superspeedway banking (14 degrees in turns) and short-track intimacy, facilitating high-stakes, side-by-side combat.

Historically, the venue is synonymous with the evolution of night racing, having hosted its first event under the lights in 1991. A defining characteristic is the abrasive surface and technical "sealant" used in the past, which rewarded drivers with exceptional tire management skills. In 2026, Richmond remains a critical anchor on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar, hosting the ToyotaCare 400 in the spring and a high-stakes summer event. Having historically tested the mettle of the NTT IndyCar Series and serving as a cathedral for the NASCAR Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series, Richmond stands as a masterclass in modern short-track engineering, where the "short-track temper" meets the precision of the Next Gen era.
