Texas World Speedway Art Print: Forgotten Dodge Charger Daytona at a Lost Super Speedway

Inaugurated in 1969, Texas World Speedway (TWS) was conceived as a twin to Michigan International Speedway, representing the zenith of high-speed oval architecture of its era. This 2.0-mile D-shaped oval in College Station was distinguished by its massive 22-degree banking, designed by Charles Moneypenny to facilitate speeds that pushed the aerodynamic limits of the late 20th century. Known to aficionados as "The Michigan of the South," it remained for decades one of only seven active two-mile superspeedways in the United States, celebrated for its wide racing surface and immense centrifugal loads.

Historically, TWS is immortalized as the site where Mario Andretti set a closed-course world record in 1973, clocking a lap at 214.158 mph in an Indy car—a benchmark that stood for years. The venue was a vital theater for the NASCAR Cup Series (hosting the Texas 500) and the USAC Championship Car series during the 1970s. However, financial instability led to its gradual decline from national calendars in the 1980s.

By 2026, the facility has largely succumbed to redevelopment, yet its historical gravity remains undisputed among researchers. It serves as a poignant reminder of the "superspeedway boom" and remains a hallowed site in the annals of American speed, where the raw horsepower of the Can-Am and ARCA series once echoed across the Texas plains.
